Cord Wood Calculator

Wondering how much firewood you actually have? Measure your woodpile and enter the dimensions here to find out how many full cords and face cords your stack contains. You can also estimate the total dollar value at your local cord price.

A full cord of firewood is a neatly stacked pile measuring 4 feet wide, 4 feet high, and 8 feet long, totaling 128 cubic feet. This is the standard legal measurement for selling firewood in the United States and Canada.

Common firewood measurements:

  • Full cord: 4 x 4 x 8 ft = 128 cubic feet
  • Face cord (rick): 4 x 8 ft x ~16 inches deep = about 42.67 cubic feet (1/3 cord)
  • Sheldon cord: 4 x 4 x 4 ft = 64 cubic feet (1/2 cord)

Keep in mind that a stacked cord contains roughly 70-90 cubic feet of actual solid wood. The rest is air space between the logs. Round, unsplit logs have more air space than neatly split pieces.
