8 Hour Shift Calculator
Planning your workday? Enter your shift start time, shift length, and break preferences to see exactly when your shift ends, when to take breaks, and whether you have overtime. Works for any shift length from 1 to 16 hours.
This calculator figures out your full shift schedule based on your start time and preferences. It accounts for unpaid lunch breaks (which extend your total time on-site) and paid short breaks (which count toward your paid hours).
Standard 8-hour shift patterns:
- First shift (day): 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM (with 30 min lunch)
- Second shift (swing): 3:00 PM - 11:30 PM
- Third shift (night): 11:00 PM - 7:30 AM
Under federal law (FLSA), employers must pay overtime at 1.5x for hours over 40 per week. Some states like California also require daily overtime after 8 hours. Short rest breaks (5-20 minutes) are legally considered paid work time, while meal breaks of 30+ minutes are typically unpaid if the employee is fully relieved of duties.
