TV Mounting Height Calculator

Where exactly should you mount your TV on the wall? Enter your TV size, how far away you sit, and your seated eye height to get the precise mounting height. The calculator gives you the center, top, and bottom edge heights so you can mark your wall with confidence.

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) recommends that the center of the screen be at or slightly below seated eye level. This minimizes neck strain and provides the most comfortable viewing experience for movies and long TV sessions.

Mounting height guidelines by seating type:

  • Standard sofa: Eye height is about 42 inches. Mount TV center at 42 inches.
  • Recliner: Eye height drops to about 36-38 inches when reclined.
  • Dining height: Eye height at a dining table is about 48 inches.
  • Bedroom (lying down): Eye height is about 24-30 inches. Consider a ceiling mount or very low wall mount.

For the right viewing distance, SMPTE recommends sitting where the screen fills about 30 degrees of your field of view. A quick rule: multiply the TV diagonal by 1.5 for the minimum distance and by 2.5 for the maximum.
