Essential Oil Dilution Calculator

Get the right number of essential oil drops for a safe and effective dilution. Pick your carrier oil amount, target dilution percentage, and how many essential oils you are blending. The calculator handles the math and gives you a safety note for your chosen concentration.

The dilution formula:

Essential Oil (mL) = Dilution% x Carrier Oil (mL) / (100 - Dilution%)

Then convert mL to drops: Drops = mL / drop size (typically 0.05 mL per drop, or 20 drops per mL)

Recommended dilution rates:

  • 0.5% -- infants (6+ months), elderly, facial skincare
  • 1% -- children ages 2-12, sensitive skin, daily facial blends
  • 2% -- standard adult dilution for everyday body oils, lotions, and massage
  • 3% -- acute issues, short-term use (muscle soreness, cold relief)
  • 5% -- very targeted, short-term applications only
  • 10%+ -- rarely recommended outside clinical aromatherapy

Common carrier oils:

  • Jojoba -- closest to skin's natural oils, long shelf life
  • Sweet almond -- light, affordable, great for massage
  • Coconut (fractionated) -- odorless, stays liquid, very light
  • Grapeseed -- light, slightly astringent, good for oily skin
