Grocery Budget Calculator
How much should you budget for groceries? Enter your household size and meal preferences to get a realistic estimate of your weekly, monthly, and annual grocery spending. The calculator is based on USDA food plan cost data adjusted for current food prices.
The USDA publishes monthly food plan costs at four levels: thrifty, low-cost, moderate, and liberal. This calculator uses three of them (August 2026 U.S. averages per adult aged 19-50):
- Budget (Thrifty plan): ~$66/week per adult, focuses on staples, cooking from scratch, minimal processed foods
- Moderate: ~$85/week per adult, balanced mix of fresh, frozen, and convenience items
- Liberal: ~$106/week per adult, premium ingredients, organic produce, specialty items
Children ages 2-17 cost about 80% of an adult food budget on average in the USDA plans. Teenagers may cost as much as or more than adults, while young children cost less. The USDA plans already cover all meals and snacks prepared at home, so no separate snack add-on is applied. Because the USDA figures are for 4-person households, the calculator applies the USDA household-size adjustment: add 20% for one person, 10% for two, and 5% for three; subtract 5% for five or six people and 10% for seven or more.
To reduce your grocery bill: plan meals weekly, make a shopping list and stick to it, buy seasonal produce, use store brands, buy in bulk for staples, reduce food waste, and consider batch cooking. Many families find they can reduce spending by 20-30% through meal planning alone.
