Weighted Blanket Calculator
Weighted blankets use deep pressure stimulation to promote relaxation and better sleep. This calculator uses the widely recommended 10% body weight rule, adjusted for your height and sleep position, to find your ideal blanket weight and size.
The standard guideline is to choose a weighted blanket that is approximately 10% of your body weight. This provides enough pressure for the calming deep-touch effect without feeling too heavy or restrictive.
- Weight: 10% of body weight, rounded to the nearest common size (5, 7, 10, 12, 15, 17, 20, or 25 lbs)
- Size: The blanket should cover your body from chin to feet but should not hang over the sides of the bed, as the overhang weight pulls the blanket off you
- Sleep position: Stomach sleepers may find the standard weight too heavy and should go 1-2 lbs lighter
Weighted blankets are filled with micro glass beads or plastic pellets sewn into small pockets to distribute weight evenly. Studies have shown they can reduce anxiety, improve sleep onset time, and increase overall sleep quality. They are especially popular for people with insomnia, anxiety, ADHD, and sensory processing differences.
When shopping, look for blankets with small quilted pockets (4-6 inch squares) for the most even weight distribution, and choose breathable materials like cotton or bamboo if you tend to sleep hot.
