Carpet Calculator
Planning to carpet a room? Enter the room dimensions and carpet roll width to find out how much material you need. The calculator provides square footage, square yardage (how carpet is typically priced), and an estimated cost range.
Carpet is typically sold by the square yard or square foot, cut from rolls that are 12 feet wide (some manufacturers offer 13.5 or 15 foot widths). The number of strips you need depends on your room width divided by the roll width, and each strip must span the full room length.
Always order 10% extra to account for waste from cutting, seam matching, and pattern alignment. For patterned carpet, you may need 15-20% extra. Seams should be placed in low-traffic areas and away from direct light when possible for the best appearance.
Installation costs vary widely by region and carpet quality. Budget carpet runs $3-4 per square foot installed, mid-range $4-6, and premium $6-8+. This includes the carpet pad, which is essential for comfort and carpet longevity.
