Ohio Sales Tax Calculator

Calculate the total sales tax on any purchase in Ohio. The state charges 5.75% on most goods, and each county adds its own rate on top. Enter your price and county rate to see the complete breakdown.

Ohio has a statewide sales tax rate of 5.75%, and all 88 counties levy an additional county sales tax ranging from 0.75% to 2.25%. This means your combined rate falls somewhere between 6.5% and 8.0% depending on where you shop.

Some of the higher-rate counties include Cuyahoga County (Cleveland) at 2.25% for an 8.0% combined rate, Franklin County (Columbus) at 1.75% for a 7.5% combined rate, and Hamilton County (Cincinnati) at 1.5% for a 7.25% combined rate. Smaller rural counties tend to have lower county rates.

Ohio exempts most groceries (unprepared food) from sales tax, along with prescription drugs and most medical supplies. Clothing is not exempt in Ohio, unlike some other states. Certain services are also taxable, including car repairs, landscaping, and personal care services.

If you are making a large purchase like a car, furniture, or appliances, the county rate can make a meaningful difference. On a $30,000 car, the difference between a 6.5% county and an 8.0% county is $450 in tax.
