Square Footage Calculator

Whether you are buying flooring, planning a paint job, or listing a property, you need accurate square footage. This calculator handles rectangular, L-shaped, and triangular spaces and lets you multiply by the number of identical rooms so you get one total for the whole project.

The core formula for a rectangular room is simple: Square Footage = Length x Width. For other shapes the calculator adjusts automatically:

  • Rectangular: Length x Width
  • L-Shaped: (Main Length x Main Width) + (Second Length x Second Width). Think of it as two rectangles joined together.
  • Triangular: 0.5 x Base x Height. Useful for attic spaces, dormer nooks, or oddly shaped alcoves.

If you have several identical rooms (like five bedrooms in a hotel), set the quantity field and the calculator multiplies for you.

Common square footage reference points:

  • Small bedroom: 100-150 sq ft
  • Standard bedroom: 150-250 sq ft
  • Living room: 200-400 sq ft
  • Two-car garage: 400-600 sq ft
  • Average U.S. home: roughly 2,300 sq ft

The results also show square meters (1 sq ft = 0.0929 sq m) and acres (1 acre = 43,560 sq ft), which is helpful when comparing land parcels or international listings.
