Not every room is a simple rectangle. This calculator handles rectangular, L-shaped, and U-shaped rooms so you can accurately estimate floor area for flooring, painting, carpet, and other renovation projects. Enter your main dimensions and any cutout sections to get precise results.
Calculating the area of a standard rectangular room is straightforward: Area = Length x Width. However, many rooms have alcoves, bump-outs, or L-shaped layouts that require subtracting cutout sections from the total rectangle.
For L-shaped rooms, the calculator treats the space as a full rectangle minus one corner cutout. For U-shaped rooms, it subtracts two equal cutouts from opposite corners. The perimeter is also calculated by tracing the full boundary of the room shape, which is essential for baseboards, crown molding, and wainscoting estimates.
When measuring your room, always measure at floor level and include any closets or alcoves you want in the total. For irregularly shaped rooms that don't fit these patterns, break the room into multiple rectangles, calculate each separately, and add the results together.
