Limestone is one of the most versatile construction materials, used for driveways, base layers, landscaping, and agricultural applications. Enter your project dimensions and select your limestone type to calculate how many tons to order.
Types of Limestone for Construction
Crushed Limestone
The most common form for construction. Angular pieces that compact well, making it ideal for driveways and base layers. Weighs about 108 lb/ft³.
Limestone Screenings
Fine particles that pass through a 3/8" screen. Used as a base for pavers and flagstone, or as a top dressing for paths. Lighter at around 100 lb/ft³ because of the air gaps between small particles.
Limestone Gravel
Rounded or semi-rounded pieces used decoratively. Does not compact as well as crushed limestone, so it is better for drainage and landscaping than structural base layers.
Quick Quantity Reference
For a 10 x 20 ft area:
- 2 inches deep: ~0.74 yd³, ~1.00 ton
- 4 inches deep: ~1.48 yd³, ~2.00 tons
- 6 inches deep: ~2.22 yd³, ~3.00 tons
Limestone vs. Gravel
Crushed limestone compacts better than regular gravel because its angular pieces interlock. That makes it a better choice for driveways and base layers where you need a solid, stable surface. It also drains well and does not get muddy like clay-heavy fill.
