Crushed Stone Calculator
Crushed stone is the backbone of driveways, base layers, and drainage systems. Enter your project area and depth to see how many tons to order. This calculator supports limestone, granite, gravel, and trap rock with their different densities.
Crushed Stone Sizing Guide
Crushed stone comes in numbered sizes. Picking the right one depends on your project:
| Size | Diameter | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| #57 | 3/4 - 1 in | Driveways, drainage, backfill |
| #67 | 3/4 in | Concrete mix, base under slabs |
| #1 | 2 - 4 in | Railroad ballast, large drainage |
| #8 | 3/8 - 1/2 in | Asphalt mix, walkways |
| #10 (screenings) | Dust - 3/8 in | Paver base, filling gaps |
How Much Crushed Stone for a Driveway?
A typical 12 x 50 ft driveway at 4 inches deep needs about 7.4 cubic yards or 10 tons of crushed stone. Most contractors recommend two layers: 4 inches of #57 stone as a base topped with 2 inches of #8 or screenings on top.
Compaction Factor
Crushed stone compacts about 15-20% after spreading and rolling. If you need exactly 4 inches of finished depth, order enough for about 5 inches of loose material. This calculator gives you the compacted volume, so add 15-20% if you want to account for compaction loss.
