# Data Usage Calculator

Estimate your monthly mobile data usage from video, music, social media, browsing, and email. Find the right phone plan size and avoid overage charges.

## What this calculates

Not sure how much data you actually use each month? Enter your daily habits for video streaming, music, social media, browsing, and email, and this calculator estimates your total data consumption and recommends a plan size.

## Inputs

- **Emails per Day** — min 0, max 1000 — Number of emails sent and received per day

## Outputs

- **Daily Data Usage** — Estimated daily data consumption
- **Monthly Data Usage** — Estimated monthly data consumption (30 days)
- **Recommended Plan** — formatted as text — Suggested mobile data plan tier

## Details

Data consumption varies widely depending on quality settings and specific apps. This calculator uses practical averages: video streaming at standard definition uses about 1.5 GB per hour, music streaming at high quality about 150 MB per hour, and social media (with its mix of images and auto-playing videos) about 300 MB per hour.

Web browsing is relatively light at about 60 MB per hour for typical news and information sites. Emails average about 300 KB each, though those with large attachments can be much more. These are all estimates based on typical mobile usage patterns.

Keep in mind that downloading apps, system updates, and cloud backups can add several GB per month on top of these activity-based estimates. If you frequently use Wi-Fi at home and work, your cellular data usage will be significantly lower than the totals shown here.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**Q: How much data does video streaming actually use?**

A: SD (480p) uses about 0.7-1.5 GB/hour, HD (720p) about 1.5-3 GB/hour, Full HD (1080p) about 3-5 GB/hour, and 4K about 7-12 GB/hour. This calculator uses SD rates. Adjust your video hours accordingly if you stream at higher quality.

**Q: Does social media really use 300 MB per hour?**

A: Yes, modern social media apps (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook) auto-load images and videos as you scroll. TikTok can use up to 840 MB per hour, while text-heavy platforms like Twitter/X use less. The 300 MB figure is a reasonable average across platforms.

**Q: Should I get an unlimited plan?**

A: If your estimated monthly usage exceeds 30-50 GB, an unlimited plan often provides better value and peace of mind. However, some unlimited plans throttle speeds after a certain threshold (usually 20-50 GB).

**Q: How can I reduce my data usage?**

A: Use Wi-Fi whenever possible, download content for offline use, reduce streaming quality in app settings, disable auto-play videos on social media, and turn off background app refresh for data-heavy apps.
