# GPA Calculator

Calculate your GPA on a 4.0 scale. Enter letter grades and credit hours for up to 6 courses. Weighted GPA calculator for college and university students.

## What this calculates

Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is a crucial academic metric used by colleges, graduate schools, and employers. This calculator uses the standard US 4.0 grading scale. Enter your letter grades and the corresponding credit hours for each course, and the calculator will compute your weighted GPA, total credits, and quality points.

## Outputs

- **GPA** — Weighted Grade Point Average (4.0 scale)
- **Total Credit Hours**
- **Total Quality Points**
- **Courses Counted**

## Details

GPA is calculated by dividing total quality points by total credit hours:

GPA = Total Quality Points / Total Credit Hours

Where quality points for each course = Grade Points × Credit Hours

Standard 4.0 scale:

  - A+, A: 4.0 | A-: 3.7

  - B+: 3.3 | B: 3.0 | B-: 2.7

  - C+: 2.3 | C: 2.0 | C-: 1.7

  - D+: 1.3 | D: 1.0 | D-: 0.7

  - F: 0.0

Courses set to "Not Used" are excluded from the calculation. Credit hours weight the grades, so a 4-credit course has more impact on your GPA than a 1-credit course.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**Q: What is a good GPA?**

A: A GPA of 3.0 (B average) is generally considered good. A 3.5+ is considered excellent and competitive for graduate school. Dean's list typically requires 3.5+. A 2.0 (C average) is usually the minimum for graduation.

**Q: How is GPA weighted by credit hours?**

A: Each course's grade points are multiplied by its credit hours to get quality points. The GPA is the sum of all quality points divided by total credit hours. This means a 4-credit A affects your GPA more than a 1-credit A.

**Q: What is the difference between semester and cumulative GPA?**

A: Semester GPA is calculated using only courses from one term. Cumulative GPA includes all courses across all semesters. This calculator can compute either depending on which courses you enter.

**Q: Do A+ and A have the same grade points?**

A: In the standard 4.0 scale used by most US universities, yes: both A+ and A equal 4.0 grade points. Some institutions award 4.3 for A+, but this is uncommon.

**Q: How can I raise my GPA?**

A: Focus on courses with more credit hours, as they have greater weight. Consider retaking courses where you received low grades if your school's grade replacement policy allows it. Seek tutoring early and use office hours.
