## Details

This calculator uses standard date arithmetic to compute the difference between your birth date and today. The age in years matches how age is legally counted: you turn a year older on your birthday, not the day before.

The zodiac sign is based on Western (tropical) astrology date ranges, which assign one of twelve signs based on the position of the Sun at the time of birth. The day-of-week calculation is exact for any date in the Gregorian calendar.

Fun fact: on average, you have lived through about 5,000 sunrises for every 14 years of age. Your 10,000th day alive falls at about age 27, and your 20,000th day around age 54.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**Q: How is age in years calculated?**

A: Age increases by one on each birthday. If today is before your birthday this year, your age is this year minus birth year minus one. Otherwise it is this year minus birth year. This matches legal and common age conventions.

**Q: Are the zodiac sign dates exact?**

A: The dates used are the standard Western (tropical) astrology ranges. Because the Sun's position shifts slightly year to year, people born on a cusp date (the first or last day of a sign) may want to check an ephemeris for their exact birth year.

**Q: Why does the hours count say approximate?**

A: The calculator assumes birth at midnight. Your actual hour count depends on the exact time of birth. Multiply days alive by 24 and add the hours since your birth time for a more precise figure.

**Q: What if my birthday is February 29?**

A: Leap day babies (leaplings) technically only have a birthday every 4 years. The next-birthday countdown will target the next February 29. In non-leap years, many people celebrate on February 28 or March 1.
