# Limestone Calculator

Calculate how much limestone you need in tons and cubic yards. Enter area dimensions and depth for driveways, base layers, and landscaping projects.

## What this calculates

Limestone is one of the most versatile construction materials, used for driveways, base layers, landscaping, and agricultural applications. Enter your project dimensions and select your limestone type to calculate how many tons to order.

## Inputs

- **Length** (ft) — min 0

## Types of Limestone for Construction

### Crushed Limestone
The most common form for construction. Angular pieces that compact well, making it ideal for driveways and base layers. Weighs about 108 lb/ft³.

### Limestone Screenings
Fine particles that pass through a 3/8" screen. Used as a base for pavers and flagstone, or as a top dressing for paths. Lighter at around 100 lb/ft³ because of the air gaps between small particles.

### Limestone Gravel
Rounded or semi-rounded pieces used decoratively. Does not compact as well as crushed limestone, so it is better for drainage and landscaping than structural base layers.

### Quick Quantity Reference

For a 10 x 20 ft area:
- 2 inches deep: ~0.74 yd³, ~1.00 ton
- 4 inches deep: ~1.48 yd³, ~2.00 tons
- 6 inches deep: ~2.22 yd³, ~3.00 tons

### Limestone vs. Gravel

Crushed limestone compacts better than regular gravel because its angular pieces interlock. That makes it a better choice for driveways and base layers where you need a solid, stable surface. It also drains well and does not get muddy like clay-heavy fill.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**Q: How much does a cubic yard of crushed limestone weigh?**

A: A cubic yard of crushed limestone weighs approximately 2,900 pounds or 1.45 tons. Limestone screenings are lighter at about 2,700 lb/yd³ (1.35 tons), while solid limestone blocks weigh around 4,500 lb/yd³.

**Q: How deep should limestone be for a driveway?**

A: A limestone driveway should be 4-8 inches deep. For light residential traffic, 4 inches is the minimum. For heavier vehicles or soft subsoil, go with 6-8 inches. Lay it in two layers: a coarser base layer and a finer surface layer.

**Q: How much limestone do I need for a 10x20 driveway?**

A: A 10x20 foot driveway at 4 inches deep needs about 1.48 cubic yards or 2 tons of crushed limestone. At 6 inches deep, you would need approximately 2.22 cubic yards or 3 tons.

**Q: Does crushed limestone harden over time?**

A: Yes, crushed limestone firms up and self-cements over time as the fine particles fill in gaps and bind with moisture. This is one of its main advantages over gravel for driveways. After compaction and a few rain cycles, it forms a surprisingly solid surface.
