# Glass Weight Calculator

Calculate glass panel weight from dimensions and thickness. Supports single strength through 3/4 inch glass. Weight in pounds and kilograms. Free glass weight calculator.

## What this calculates

Knowing the weight of a glass panel matters for structural support, shipping, and safe handling. Enter the panel dimensions and pick a thickness, and this calculator gives you the weight in pounds and kilograms. It handles everything from 3/32-inch single-strength window glass to 3/4-inch heavy plate.

## Inputs

- **Width** (in) — min 0.1, max 240
- **Height** (in) — min 0.1, max 240
- **Glass Thickness** — options: 3/32" (2.4 mm) - Single Strength, 1/8" (3 mm) - Double Strength, 5/32" (4 mm), 3/16" (5 mm), 1/4" (6 mm) - Standard, 5/16" (8 mm), 3/8" (10 mm), 1/2" (12 mm), 3/4" (19 mm) — Select glass thickness
- **Number of Panels** — min 1, max 100

## Outputs

- **Panel Area** (ft²)
- **Weight Per Panel** (lbs)
- **Weight Per Panel** (kg)
- **Total Weight** (lbs) — Combined weight of all panels

## Details

Standard soda-lime glass has a density of about 157.5 lb/ft³ (2,500 kg/m³). The weight formula is simple: Weight = Width x Height x Thickness x Density. A quick shorthand: 1/4-inch glass weighs about 3.28 lbs per square foot.

Here are common weights per square foot by thickness: 1/8" = 1.64 lbs, 3/16" = 2.46 lbs, 1/4" = 3.28 lbs, 3/8" = 4.92 lbs, 1/2" = 6.56 lbs, 3/4" = 9.84 lbs. Tempered glass weighs the same as standard glass of equal thickness since the tempering process does not change the density.

Laminated glass is slightly heavier because of the interlayer (PVB or SGP), but the difference is small, roughly 1-2% more. For practical purposes, you can use this calculator for laminated glass and the result will be very close.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**Q: How much does 1/4-inch glass weigh per square foot?**

A: One-quarter inch (6 mm) glass weighs approximately 3.28 pounds per square foot (16 kg per square meter). This is the most common thickness for residential windows and standard glass applications.

**Q: Does tempered glass weigh more than regular glass?**

A: No. Tempered glass weighs exactly the same as standard (annealed) glass of the same thickness. The tempering process heats and rapidly cools the glass to increase strength, but it does not change the density or weight.

**Q: How thick should glass be for a tabletop?**

A: Glass tabletops typically use 3/8-inch (10 mm) or 1/2-inch (12 mm) tempered glass. A 3/8-inch top works for tables under 36 inches wide with solid support. Larger tables or those with minimal support should use 1/2-inch glass. A 3x5-foot 1/2-inch glass tabletop weighs about 49 pounds.
