# Flooring Calculator

Calculate how much flooring you need in square feet and boxes. Supports hardwood, laminate, vinyl, and engineered flooring.

## What this calculates

Whether you are installing hardwood, laminate, vinyl plank, or engineered flooring, getting the right amount is essential. This calculator takes your room dimensions and tells you exactly how many square feet and boxes of flooring to purchase, including the waste factor for cuts and the underlayment needed.

## Inputs

- **Room Length** (ft) — min 0
- **Room Width** (ft) — min 0
- **Flooring Type** — options: Hardwood, Laminate, Vinyl Plank (LVP), Engineered Hardwood
- **Coverage Per Box** (ft²) — min 1, max 60 — Check the box label. Typical: 20-25 ft² per box.
- **Waste Factor** (%) — min 0, max 25 — 10% for straight lay, 15% for diagonal, 20% for herringbone
- **Price Per ft²** ($) — min 0
- **Closet Length (optional)** (ft) — min 0
- **Closet Width (optional)** (ft) — min 0

## Outputs

- **Room Area** (ft²)
- **Total Area (with closet)** (ft²)
- **Area to Purchase** (ft²) — Including waste factor
- **Boxes Needed**
- **Estimated Material Cost** — formatted as currency
- **Underlayment Needed** (ft²) — Recommended for most floating floors

## Frequently Asked Questions

**Q: How much extra flooring should I buy for waste?**

A: For straight (parallel) installation, add 10%. For diagonal installation, add 15%. For herringbone or chevron patterns, add 20%. Complex room shapes with many cuts also warrant extra material. Always keep leftover flooring for future repairs.

**Q: Do I need underlayment for flooring?**

A: Most floating floors (laminate, vinyl plank, engineered hardwood) require underlayment for moisture protection, sound dampening, and minor subfloor leveling. Nail-down hardwood and glue-down floors typically do not need underlayment. Some flooring comes with attached underlayment.

**Q: How many square feet are in a box of flooring?**

A: Coverage per box varies by product: laminate typically covers 20-25 ft², hardwood 18-22 ft², and vinyl plank 20-24 ft². Always check the specific product packaging for exact coverage.

**Q: Should I acclimate flooring before installation?**

A: Yes. Hardwood should acclimate for 3-5 days in the room where it will be installed. Laminate needs 48 hours. Vinyl plank typically needs 24-48 hours. This allows the material to adjust to the room's temperature and humidity, preventing post-installation gaps or buckling.
